How to Calm a Stressed Nervous System

Is Your Nervous System Stuck in Survival Mode? How to Find Calm Again
Have you ever reached the end of the day feeling completely exhausted, only to find yourself lying awake at night with a racing mind?
Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by even the smallest tasks, find yourself snapping more easily than you used to, or constantly feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You may be doing everything that needs to be done, yet deep down you know something feels out of balance.
For many women, especially busy mums, these experiences can become so familiar that they are accepted as a normal part of life. However, they may actually be signs of a dysregulated nervous system.
Understanding how chronic stress affects the nervous system can help explain why you feel the way you do and, more importantly, what you can do to support your wellbeing and find a greater sense of calm.
What Is the Nervous System and Why Does It Matter?
Your nervous system is the body’s communication network. It is constantly gathering information from your environment and deciding how your body should respond.
When you feel safe and supported, your nervous system allows your body to rest, repair and recover. When it senses stress or danger, it activates your stress response to help you cope with challenges.
This response is incredibly useful during short periods of stress. The problem occurs when stress becomes ongoing.
Modern life places enormous demands on many women. Balancing work, family, relationships, finances, household responsibilities and the emotional needs of others can leave little room for rest. Over time, the nervous system may begin operating as though it needs to stay on high alert all the time.
When this happens, your body can become stuck in what is often referred to as “survival mode.”
Common Signs of a Disregulated Nervous System
A disregulated nervous system doesn’t always look the way people expect. It isn’t necessarily a dramatic breakdown or obvious crisis.
In fact, many women experiencing nervous system overload appear highly capable on the outside. They continue showing up for everyone around them while quietly struggling beneath the surface.
You may notice that you feel tired no matter how much sleep you get. Your thoughts may race constantly, making it difficult to switch off or relax. Everyday challenges can feel overwhelming, and your patience may be shorter than it once was.
Some women experience brain fog, poor concentration, digestive discomfort, headaches, muscle tension or unexplained aches and pains. Others simply describe feeling disconnected from themselves, as though they are moving through life on autopilot.
These are often the body’s way of communicating that it needs support.
How Chronic Stress Affects Your Mind and Body
Stress is not just something that happens in your mind. It affects your entire body.
When your nervous system is continually activated, stress hormones remain elevated for longer periods. This can impact your sleep, digestion, energy levels, emotional wellbeing and overall resilience.
You may find yourself feeling constantly “on,” even when there is no immediate reason to be stressed. Rest becomes difficult because your body has forgotten what true relaxation feels like.
Many women tell me they feel both exhausted and wired at the same time. They desperately want to slow down, yet their mind and body seem unable to cooperate.
This is one of the reasons why simply taking a day off or getting more sleep does not always resolve the deeper effects of chronic stress.
Why Your Body May Be Struggling to Relax
One of the most overlooked aspects of nervous system regulation is that the body needs to feel safe before it can truly rest.
If you’ve spent months or even years carrying stress, your nervous system may have become accustomed to functioning in a heightened state of alertness. As a result, slowing down can actually feel uncomfortable.
You may finally sit down to relax only to find yourself thinking about everything you should be doing. You may feel guilty for resting or struggle to enjoy quiet moments.
This isn’t a personal failing. It’s often a sign that your nervous system has been under pressure for too long.
The good news is that the nervous system is adaptable. With consistent support, it can begin learning how to move out of survival mode and into a more balanced state.
Simple Ways to Support Nervous System Regulation
Supporting your nervous system doesn’t require perfection. Often, the most effective changes are small and sustainable.
Creating moments of stillness throughout your day, spending time in nature, practising mindful breathing, reducing overstimulation and prioritising self-care can all help signal safety to the body.
Even a few minutes of intentional rest can make a difference.
The key is consistency. Small acts of self-care performed regularly can help create a foundation for greater emotional wellbeing, resilience and nervous system regulation over time.
Can Energy Healing Support Nervous System Healing?
As more people seek natural ways to manage stress and improve their wellbeing, many are exploring complimentary approaches such as Reiki and energy healing.
One of the reasons energy healing can feel so supportive is that it encourages the body to slow down. In a world that constantly asks us to do more, having dedicated time to rest, receive and reconnect with ourselves can be incredibly powerful.
Many clients describe experiencing a deep sense of relaxation during their sessions. Others report feeling calmer, more grounded, emotionally lighter and better able to navigate life’s challenges afterwards.
At Souls First in Craigieburn, Melbourne, I support women who are experiencing stress, overwhelm, emotional fatigue and energetic depletion through Custom Crystal Reiki sessions and through the Pain Relief Intensive sessions powered via The Silvers Healing Method™. My intention is to create a safe and nurturing space where clients can pause, recharge and reconnect with themselves.
While energy healing is not intended to replace medical treatment or professional healthcare, many people choose to include it as part of their holistic wellbeing and self-care journey.
Finding Calm in a Busy World
If you’ve been feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally drained or unable to switch off, your body may be sending you an important message.
Your nervous system was never designed to carry endless stress without rest.
The symptoms you are experiencing are not necessarily signs that you are failing. They may simply be signs that your body is asking for support, balance and recovery.
When we begin listening to those signals and prioritising our wellbeing, we create an opportunity for healing, resilience and lasting change.
You deserve moments of calm. You deserve time to recharge. And most importantly, you deserve support before burnout becomes your normal.
What would change in your life if your nervous system felt calm, balanced and supported more often?
Love and light,
